About

A power station, reimagined as a home for modern art.

Tate Modern opened in May 2000 inside the former Bankside Power Station. In two decades it has become one of the most visited galleries of modern and contemporary art in the world — a place where anyone can encounter the art of our time, for free.

Our collection

Over 60,000 works of international modern and contemporary art, from 1900 to today. Free to explore on levels 2, 3 and 4.

The building

Designed by Herzog & de Meuron, with the Blavatnik Building extension opened in 2016 — including the ten-storey Switch House and viewing level.

Our mission

To increase everyone’s understanding and enjoyment of modern and contemporary art. Free entry, always, to the collection.
